Greek Island of Cythera
Mediterranean Sea
0723 Local Time

The gleaming white gravel crunched softly under Walkiria’s boots as she landed in the roadway outside the Yoyodyne research facility. She strode towards the main gate as a pair of security personnel walked out to meet her. The pair of guards both wore the standard dark grey uniforms she had seen Yoyodyne Security forces in Angel Falls wear. Both of them had submachine guns of a futuristic design slung over their shoulders.

“Ms. Walkiria? We were told to expect you. Director Kaliovras is on his way out to greet you. Would you come this way?” the tallest of the pair gestured towards the open gate.

Walkiria smiled and nodded. She followed the guards into the compound. Her eyes roamed the walls; years of military experience allowing her to spot the concealed gun emplacements and hidden sentries. One thing she had learned is that Sam and Claire St. James took corporate security very seriously. “You guys need to see some I.D. or anything?” she asked jokingly.

The guards smiled. “Ahh, no. We don’t get too many flying red-haired amazons landing outside. And the head office told us to expect you. We watched your approach on radar.”

“Well, I’m glad no one fired a missile at me,” she replied, only partially in jest.

Before the guards could respond, a white Jeep Grand Cherokee drove up and came to a sudden stop. A slim man with Greek features got out and came over to Walkiria. “Ms. Walkiria. So nice to finally meet you. I am Director Kaliovras. We appreciate your help in this matter.”

“Glad to help. I was told the item couldn’t travel by regular airplane?”

The head of the facility nodded. “Yes, it requires a specially shielded plane. And both of ours are busy with regularly scheduled transports to our facilities in Thailand and Australia. Putting them on a regular plane would be a disaster. The energy flux would destroy any unshielded aircraft’s electronics in less than an hour. Normally our two transports are enough to supply all our facilities. But the sudden and unexplained deterioration of the Quantum Gemerald Matrixes at the Angel Falls facilities threw everything out of whack. Those matrixes should have lasted for at least ten more years. Now the fusion reactors at the Arcology have less than a week of life left.”

“And you can’t just refuel them or something?” Walkiria asked.

The director shook his head. “No, the Quantum Gemerald Matrix is at the heart of every Yoyodyne fusion plant. Whatever occurred Halloween night in Angel Falls caused all of them in the city to decay in a way we have never seen before. So complete replacement is our only option. I am just glad we were able to make the replacements in time, and that you were available to carry them to that Angel Falls arcology for us.”

“Glad to be of help. So, where are these things? I would like to get back home as soon as possible. It’s Valentine’s Day and I have something special planned for my wife.”

Director Kaliovras looked uncomfortable and cleared his throat. “Well, we weren’t expecting you quite this early. We are completing the final resonance tempering of the matrixes now. They should be ready in just under two hours. I am sorry that is the best we can do.”

Walkiria paused to consider. Angel Falls was six hours behind Greece. That made it around 0130 there. Add two hours of waiting, and two and a half hours flight time from Greece to Angel Falls and she could still make it in time to wake Olga. That was assuming the Soviet Superwoman had actually gone to bed after her nightly patrol. It being Angel Falls, there was no telling what sort of disaster or chaos Olga might have encountered. “That will be fine, the important thing is that we get this replacements made right and delivered in time. As long as O.D.I.N. can give me a clear flight path, I can make it in time.”

“Just remember, the shipping containers are not rated for vacuum. So please keep your altitude below 25,000 feet on your return flight,” Director Kaliovras instructed.

“Good to know. Ok, no buzzing Chinese surveillance satellites on the way back,” Walkiria joked.

The scientist smiled. “That would probably be best. In the mean time, can I offer you a free breakfast in our cafeteria? Or a hot shower? Our facilities here are a limited, but what we have is at your disposal,” he offered.

Thank you Dr. Kaliovras. But I don’t have to eat. And if I just wait around, it will make it seem like days instead of hours. What I would really like to do is explore the island a bit. This is actually my first time in Greece. Cythera looked lovely from the air. I wouldn’t mind doing a little sight seeing while I am here.

Dr. Kaliovras smiled. “Of course. The town to the north is the biggest settlement on the island. But there won’t be much activity this early. But if you follow the coastline to the west, you will come across some interesting ruins you might like to see. They include one of the oldest temples for the goddess Aphrodite.”

“That sounds perfect. Thanks for the information.”

“My pleasure. And if you are ever back this way, please give me a call. My wife and I would love to have you and your wife over for dinner sometime.”

“Thank you Dr. Kaliovras. That is very nice of you. If we can get away, I will take you up on that offer. I’ll return in about two hours. If there are any other developments, you can get my communicator frequency from O.D.I.N. and contact me directly.”

Walkiria shook hands with the facility’s director and said goodbye. With the smallest bit of concentration she summoned her power and took to the air. A gentle Mediterranean breeze was blowing as she turned towards the coast and accelerated. Touching the side of her goggles she opened a comm. Channel. “O.D.I.N., are you there?”

“Of course,” the artificial intelligence replied immediately. “What can I do for you Maia?”

“Director Kaliovras says it will be two hours before the matrixes will be ready for transport.”

“One hour and forty-nine minutes actually,” corrected the A.I.

Walkiria rolled her eyes. “Yes, thanks. Anyway, I am going to do some sightseeing while I wait. I was wondering if you could tell me if Olga ever got to bed last night?”

“Affirmative. It was actually fairly quiet last night. There was a tanker truck that overturned on the interstate that she helped with, but Aurum Sol and Angelina had it mostly taken care of by the time Olga arrived. She stayed to help AFFD with the clean up while Aurum and Angelina took care of the wounded. She is in bed now sleeping.”

“Good, she has been pushing herself again ever since the Halloween night attack. I just wanted to check on her.”

“Do you have plans for Valentine’s Day?” O.D.I.N. inquired.

“Yes, I do. That’s why I wanted to make sure I could get back early. As long as my flight path is clear, it shouldn’t be a problem.”

The artificial intelligence gave a very human-sounding chuckle. “Don’t worry about that Maia. I am on good terms with the FAA’s master computer. I can guarantee your flight path will be clear.”

“O.D.I.N., have you been hacking into government computer networks again?” Walkiria chided.

“Just making sure Yoyodyne’s interests are protected.”

“All right. Just don’t get caught. And can you contact me if anything happens with Olga before I get back?”

“Of course. Have a good sightseeing trip,” the A.I. replied.

“Thanks. Walkiria out,” she said as she terminated the communication link.

The ionic–powered heroine soared through the clear blue early morning skies, leaving a rapidly dissipating energy trail behind her as she flew westward. It wasn’t long before she spotted the white stones of the ancient ruins standing out in contrast to the lush green countryside. Swooping to avoid a small flock of seabirds she did a graceful barrel roll and came down softly in the loggia of the ancient temple. Walkiria was struck by the elaborate nature of the ruin. Clearly this had once been a very important religious site for the ancient worshippers.

The white marble had once been smooth and polished to a bright gleaming finish. But time and exposure had taken their toll on the ancient structure. Still, the heroine could see the majesty the builders of the temple had tried to create. Modern authorities had done some restoration and preservation to help the structure withstand the elements. She could see where modern mortar and materials had been used to shore up the structure, presumably to make it safe and stable for visitors. Reaching out, Walkiria tried to feel a connection with those ancients who had built the structure. Who had worshiped here, who had made offerings and left prayers. Had she lived here, is this where she and Olga would have come to pray?

“The altar is through those arches if you want to make a prayer,” a female voice interrupted her thoughts.

Walkiria spun around, her instantaneous reflexes making the move hard to follow with the naked eye. Leaning against the base of a Doric column a blonde woman stood smiling at the heroine.

“Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t realize anyone else would be here this early.” Walkiria tried not to stare, the woman might have been simply dressed in a white sundress but her beauty was still striking.

“This is when the temple receives worshipers; when the Belt of Venus is still visible on the horizon. Given your thoughts about a loved one, I thought you must be here to pray.” The woman favored Walkiria with a brilliant smile that somehow made her look even more attractive. The way the early morning sun shone on her white dress and golden blonde hair it almost seemed as if she was surrounded by a nimbus of golden light for a moment.

“How did you know I was thinking about a loved one?” Walkiria asked. Something about the woman seemed strange; yet the heroine couldn’t help but feel like she was talking to an old friend or familiar acquaintance.

The woman laughed, the sound of it seeming to fill the temple and make it sparkle in the morning light. “I know the look of love, my dear. After all, this is a temple of love, is it not?”

“Ahh, yes. I suppose that makes sense… sort of. My name is Maia, by the way.”

The woman looked at her for a moment. “Maia. Maia,” she repeated, as if she was speaking the name for the first time and was trying it out. “You can call me Acidalia, Maia. Can I ask who you were thinking of?”

“Acidalia, what a lovely name. Oh, I was thinking of my wife. She is back home. Today is Valentine’s Day. I guess it has me in a romantic frame of mind. I know it’s silly but…”

“No! Love and romance are never silly!” Acidalia countered vehemently. A strong wind suddenly blew through the temple ruins as woman reached out to grab Maia’s arm. “Do you understand? They are never silly!” The temple darkened as a cloud seemed to pass in front of the sun.

“Sure, sure. I misspoke. Sorry.” Maia looked at the agitated woman with some concern.

“Well, all right then.” The blonde woman smiled as the gust of wind died abruptly. The sun came out from behind the cloud, bathing the temple in bright sunlight once more. “So, you were thinking of your spouse? You carry a locket with her likeness, or some trinket to remind you of her when you are apart?”

Maia jerked back in shock. She could feel her face grow warm as a blush spread over her countenance. “How… how could you possibly know that?” she asked with growing alarm.

Acidalia favored Maia with another glowing smile. She watched the big woman visible relax as the tension seemed to drain out of Maia as if by magic. “May I see what it is,” she asked, still smiling as she reached out to touch Maia’s arm again.

The heroine felt herself smile. It suddenly seemed like a perfectly logical request. Without a second thought Maia unzipped the top of her unitard a bit and reached in to pull out a folded piece of white silk. “It’s Olga’s. She wore this on our wedding day. I keep it next to my heart whenever I am away from her. It must seem…”

“It seems wonderful,” Acidalia said softly. The blonde woman softly touched the surface of the silk with her fingertips. The white silk seemed to glow in the bright sunlight. “It is a piece of her you carry to honor your love for her,” she said quietly.

Maia nodded, relieved the woman understood. She pulled her hand back, lifting the cloth to her face and inhaling. Maia could still smell the perfume Olga wore that day. When she closed her eyes she could almost feel the silk warm as if Olga had just taken the silk shawl off her body. The cloth glistened in the sunlight as stirred in the gentle breeze that began to swirl around her.

“A piece of her that is always with you,” Acidalia said softly as she stepped back, the nimbus of light surrounding her growing brighter as she moved away.

Maia nodded, only half listening as the glowing cloth seemed to move in the breeze like a living thing. As the cloth stroked her face, Maia gasped in delight. She could feel Olga’s fingertips brush her cheek. The smell of Olga’s perfume filled her senses. She could feel the warmth of Olga’s body next to hers. The silk shawl continued to move over her body, somehow managing to slide open the top of her costume and beginning to work it over her shoulders.

Maia stood there, her eyes closed as she was transfixed by the sensation of Olga’s touch on her skin. Wherever the shawl moved, it felt like Olga was there touching her. She could, could sense Olga there as all awareness of her surrounds faded away. There was only Olga; under her, over her, kissing her the way only Olga could, touching her in all the right spots, making her feel the things only Olga could. All that mattered was that Olga was here now, with her, joining with her, sharing the love and passion they felt for each. Olga’s caresses grew stronger and more passionate as Maia felt her body respond to her lover. Time seemed to stop, or at least no longer matter as Maia embraced her lover.

Finally Maia opened her eyes as she reached out pull Olga closer to her again. There was a sudden moment of disorientation as she realized that she was not in her bed with Olga. That she was lying in the middle of an ancient Greek temple. That she was lying in the middle of an ancient Greek temple NAKED!

Maia let out a short yelp and bolted upright. The silk scarf was still wrapped around her neck and resting between her breasts. When she touched it, it was as warm as if it had just come out of the dryer. Maia looked around, trying to make sense of what had happened. The blonde woman Acidalia was nowhere to be seen. The only sounds were the chirping of birds and the soft chiming of the communicator built into her goggles. Scampering to collect the pieces of her costume scattered all around her, Maia slipped on the goggles and activated them.

“Hello Maia. Are you all right? I couldn’t contact you,” O.D.I.N. asked with concern.

“Oh, sorry O.D.I.N. I took off my goggles while I was…” Maia paused, trying to think how she could explain this. “While I was exploring these ruins,” she finished, hoping the artificial intelligence wouldn’t ask for a more detailed explanation.

“I see. Well Director Kaliovras says the Quantum Gemerald matrixes are ready for transport. And Olga is awake. She wants you to contact her when you have time.”

Maia glanced at the time display the goggles provided. “Two hours!” she thought to herself. “What happened to the time?” Her mind raced, as she frantically got dressed. “God forbid anyone else comes up here right now,” she thought.

“Ahh, O.D.I.N. Could you tell Kaliovras I’ll be there in fifteen minutes to pick up the matrixes. And could you go ahead and patch me through to Olga?” Maia asked as she pulled her unitard closed. Tucking the still-warm silk into her top, the heroine took to the air and sped off towards the research facility.

The communicator chirped as a channel opened. “Good morning Возлюбленная<beloved>. Are you enjoying your trip to Greece?” Olga asked.

Maia felt herself blush. “Umm, yes you could say that. Did you sleep well?” Maia asked, hoping to change the subject.

“Mmmm, yes,” Olga literally purred over the communicator. “I had the most intense dream. We were in this old temple…”

The birds around the temple suddenly fell silent as Acidalia seemed to step out from behind a column as if appearing from thin air. Stepping into the middle of the temple’s cella, she raised her arms as the golden aura around her intensified. She raised her arms and stretched out her hands. Acidalia inhaled deeply several times, growing in size as she fed on the residual emotional energy Walkiria had left behind. Flashing her dazzling smile, she began to disappear in a shower of golden light. “Mortals,” she said before vanishing from sight.
